A Solenoid Valve for a Motorcycle Engine
Customer Problem
A motorcycle manufacturer wanted to replace a manual pressure release valve on their engines with an automatic valve. The valve vents some of the pressure in the cylinder during startup to reduce load on the starter. The valve needed to withstand high temperatures and vibration and maintain consistent operation throughout its service life. Before approaching TLX, the manufacturer contacted other suppliers and was told that it was not possible to produce a valve with the desired specifications.
The TLX Solution
TLX’s engineers designed and produced a normally closed pressure release valve that satisfied all of the manufacturer’s requirements. The valve provides reliable operation at temperatures as high as 240°C, withstands engine vibrations, and has a service life of greater than 100 million cycles. The manufacturer was able to reduce the total cost of the motorcycle because the lower starting compression allowed them to specify a smaller starter, battery, and alternator.
