Making Snowmobiles Safer
Customer Problem
A company needed a solution to actuate an emergency braking system they were developing for snowmobiles. The system was to be attached to the snowmobile’s skis and included a flap that would rotate down to catch the snow. The brake could be manually deployed by the operator or would automatically deploy to stop the snowmobile if the operator fell off. The actuator needed to be small and powered by four AA batteries.
The TLX Solution
TLX Technologies designed and produced a custom, low-voltage latching solenoid to actuate the braking mechanism. Only a short pulse of current was needed to actuate the solenoid’s armature. This meant the brakes could be kept retracted or deployed without drawing any current. The solenoid was so energy efficient that four AA batteries could power the solenoid for a minimum of 10,000 cycles.
