Solenoids for Motorcycle Engines
TLX designs solenoids that solve our customers' unique dilemmas. This is an example of how TLX ingenuity was applied in the field.
Extreme conditions in engines, such as high temperatures and vibration abuse, create a set of unique challenges for engineers. Components for these systems must be manufactured to withstand these conditions, while maintaining consistent operation over the part’s life cycle.
A manufacturer was looking for a solution for the manual compression release valve on a motorcycle engine. The release valve, used to vent the cylinder during start up, reduces the compression load on the starter system. Before contacting TLX, the manufacturer approached several suppliers and was told that it could not be done.
This project presented several unique design challenges for TLX’s engineering team. Not only did the manufacturer want to move from a manual to an automatic solution, but the environmental conditions demanded that the solenoid valve:
- Consistently operate at temperatures exceeding 572°F (300°C)
- Withstand the vibration created by the engine
- Fit into a smaller package size
TLX successfully designed a pressure release solenoid valve that fit all the requirements and reducted total vehicle cost. The cost reduction was because the battery, starter motor and alternator could be smaller due to the reduced load on the starter system.
