The Problem

Lithium-ion batteries fires are different than everything else

Most fires rely on external oxygen to burn. Lithium-ion battery fires are different. A battery in thermal runaway produces its own oxygen. Extinguishing agents or techniques that smother the fire are not viable and can create an explosion hazard by trapping flammable gases. The battery case also acts like a shield that prevents externally applied extinguishing agents from reaching the source of the fire.

Lithium-ion batteries in thermal runaway can exceed temperatures of 600°C and can re-ignite hours or weeks after the initial event and suppression. Applications relying on conventional fire protection are not adequately protected.

Trying to extinguish a lithium-ion battery fire after it has fully developed only leads to the total loss of battery-powered vehicles or equipment and risks extended property damage and loss of life. The only effective answer is an onboard fire suppression system equipped with continuous thermal runaway monitoring.

Our Solution

Onboard purpose-built suppression

We design and produce custom onboard lithium-ion battery fire suppression systems that deliver the extinguishing agent directly to the failed cells inside the battery enclosure. A sensor package automatically detects thermal runaway to rapidly discharge a specialized extinguishing agent to the source of the fire, extinguishing it in seconds.

Early thermal runaway detection

Sensors monitor parameters such as battery cell temperature, battery enclosure pressure, and gases produced during battery failure (CO, CO2, H2) to detect thermal runaway before a fire breaks out.

Targeted discharge

A suppression agent designed specifically for lithium-ion battery fires is routed through a simple, compact system of tubing and valves via nozzle manifolds into the battery enclosure. The specific agent is chosen based on application, battery chemistry, and enclosure design.

Automatic & manual activation

System activation is fully automatic. Support for a manual operator override is available based on application requirements.

Designed for certification

Systems are engineered to support UL, CE, and NFPA compliance. We work in collaboration with OEMs and system design teams to provide support towards system certification as required.

Specialized extinguishing agents

Our non-toxic, PFAS-free extinguishing agents use ingredients listed on the EPA’s Safer Chemical Ingredients List (SCIL) and are designed to extinguish lithium-ion battery fires in seconds.
