A Solenoid to Control the Vents on a Seat Mold

TLX Technologies developed a low-voltage, custom latching solenoid for a manufacturer of foam injection molding machines.

Customer Problem

A manufacturer of foam injection molding machines needed to improve their product for a client that made seats for automotive OEMs. The manufacturer wanted greater control over the density of the foam so that each section of the seat could meet OEM specifications. To achieve this, a battery-operated actuator was needed to open and close vents on the seat mold, allowing air and gases to escape as the foam expanded.

The TLX Solution

TLX Technologies designed and produced a custom, low-voltage latching solenoid to open and close the vents on the seat mold. Only a short pulse of current was needed to actuate the solenoid’s armature. This meant that vents could maintain an opened or closed status without drawing any current. The solenoid was so energy efficient that four AA batteries could power the solenoid for a minimum of 50,000 cycles.
