A Replacement for Pyrotechnic Actuators

TLX designed an electrically controlled actuator that used only a short pulse of current to release the burst pin.

Customer Problem

Multi-cylinder fire protection systems have historically used pyrotechnic actuators to puncture the burst disc on the pressurized pilot vessel to release the pilot charge into the pneumatic actuation line. While these actuators were dependable, they could only be used once and had to be replaced after firing. Added to that, tightening shipping restrictions on pyrotechnic devices forced fire suppression system manufacturers to look for an alternative solution.

The TLX Solution

TLX developed a latching solenoid actuator with integrated supervision that uses a permanent magnet to hold the burst pin in the ready position without drawing any current. When triggered by the fire control panel, a short pulse of current releases the burst pin, and a powerful spring drives the pin through the pilot vessel’s burst disc. Unlike pyrotechnic actuators, which can only be used once, TLX’s actuator is resettable after activation up to 200 times.
