Latching Technology for Better Welding Clamps

TLX Technologies designed a heavy-duty latching solenoid to replace pneumatic clamps on a welding fixture.

Customer Problem

A manufacturer needed a solution to replace the pneumatically powered clamps that held workpieces for welding on their production line. The solution needed to both precisely locate the workpieces in the welding fixture and also hold them firmly in place. Once welding was complete, the solution needed to release the workpieces so they could continue down the line and new workpieces could be positioned.

The TLX Solution

TLX Technologies designed a custom heavy-duty latching solenoid, which used only a short pulse of current to actuate and drew no current to maintain state. The end of the armature had a pin, which would extend when the solenoid was de-latched to engage the workpiece to properly locate and secure it in the welding fixture. The force needed to hold the workpiece was provided by the solenoid’s powerful spring.
