A Solenoid for Smooth Gear Changes
Customer Problem
TLX Technologies was approached by a manufacturer to design a valve for an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) automatic transmission. An automatic transmission uses a sophisticated hydraulic system that routes transmission fluid through a series of passages in the valve body to select the appropriate gear ratio. To facilitate smooth gear changes, the manufacturer needed a valve with precise variable pressure control that could reliably operate while continuously submerged in hot automatic transmission fluid.
The TLX Solution
TLX designed a three-way proportional pressure reducing/relieving valve for the manufacturer. This normally open, direct-acting solenoid valve used a control current ranging from 0 to 1.5 amps. When unpowered, the valve was fully open. When powered, the valve’s plunger would travel proportional to the amount of current applied, providing continuously variable pressure regulation. The valve was capable of operating in automatic transmission fluid temperatures as high as 93°C (200°F).
