A Solenoid for a Durable Medical Equipment Device

TLX Technologies developed a compact latching solenoid for a device that helped patients avoid bedsores.

Durable Medical Equipment

Customer Problem

A medical device manufacturer needed a solenoid for an alternating pressure mattress pump/control unit. The pump would inflate and deflate bladders in the top of the mattress to keep patients from getting bedsores. The manufacturer had specific requirements. To keep the pump/control unit compact and able to operate on backup battery power, the solenoid had to be small and use as little power as possible.

The TLX Solution

TLX Technologies designed and produced a small, fully encapsulated latching solenoid. TLX chose to use latching technology because the solenoid would only use a short pulse of current to actuate and would draw no current to maintain state, resulting in minimal power consumption. The solenoid was very small, with the coil assembly measuring only 34.9 mm in length.
