A Custom Solenoid for a Metal Detection System

TLX designed a latching solenoid with a fast response time for a safety system on food processing equipment.

Customer Problem

Metal detection systems are a vital safety feature that detect metal contamination in food processing. If metal is detected in the product stream, the system must immediately stop the food processing equipment so that contaminated product can be removed and the source of the metal contamination can be eliminated. A manufacturer of food processing metal detection equipment needed a solenoid with a fast response time to activate the safety system.

The TLX Solution

TLX Technologies designed a custom latching solenoid that actuated within 15 milliseconds. A short pulse of current of one polarity would de-latch the solenoid, activating the safety system. Once the metal contamination was corrected, a short pulse of current of the opposite polarity would latch the solenoid, reactivating the processing equipment. Because the solenoid was compact and drew no current to maintain state, it was a cost-effective, energy-efficient solution.
