A Compact, Battery-Powered Solenoid

TLX developed a low-cost, battery-operated latching solenoid to open and close a low-pressure gas valve.

Outdoor Heater

Customer Problem

A manufacturer needed a cost-effective solution for operating a low-pressure gas valve for an outdoor patio heater. The actuator needed to be compact and capable of holding the valve open for extended periods. In addition, the manufacturer also specified that the actuator needed to be battery powered.

The TLX Solution

TLX determined that the best solution was a custom open frame latching solenoid. The open frame design was chosen to keep the solenoid compact and reduce cost. The latching solenoid used only a short pulse of current to actuate the armature and drew no current to maintain state. This meant the solenoid could hold the valve open without drawing any power and was so energy efficient it could operate on the same battery for an entire season.
