Energy-Efficient Solenoids for Smart Lockers

Latching solenoids are the preferred actuation solution for smart locker locking mechanisms because they use only a short pulse of current to actuate and draw no current to maintain position.

The Future of Last-Mile Fulfillment

Globally, smart lockers are becoming the dominant last-mile fulfillment solution. There is a growing demand for battery- and solar-powered options to service rural and remote locations, fulfill the need for flexible placement, and meet sustainability goals. Regardless of the power source, they need actuators for the compartment locking mechanisms that minimize power consumption and maximize reliability. Latching solenoids are the preferred actuator.

Why Use Latching Solenoids?

Latching solenoids use only a short pulse of current (just milliseconds) to actuate and do not draw any current to maintain position. Here’s how they work:

A pulse of one polarity briefly energizes the solenoid, drawing the armature to a stationary pole where it is held in place by either a permanent magnet or residual magnetism. In this position, the solenoid is latched.

To unlatch the solenoid, a pulse of the opposite polarity cancels the magnetic field holding the armature in the latched position, and a spring returns the armature to its home position.

Latching vs On Off Graph

What Are the Benefits?

By using latching solenoids to actuate the locking mechanisms, smart locker compartments can maintain both a locked and an unlocked status for as long as needed without drawing any current.

Because latching solenoids draw no current to maintain position, they can use a higher current pulse, resulting in greater actuation speed and force without the excessive power consumption and heat generation associated with conventional continuous-duty solenoids.
