Solenoids for Motorcycle Engines

A manufacturer needed an automatic compression release valve for a motorcycle engine. TLX Technologies designed a solenoid valve that met all the requirements and reduced total vehicle cost.

Customer Problem

A manufacturer wanted to replace the manual compression release valve on a motorcycle engine with an automatic valve. The release valve vents the cylinder during start up, reducing the compression load on the starter system. The automatic valve needed to withstand the extreme conditions created by the engine, such as high temperatures and vibrations, while maintaining consistent operation over the part’s life cycle.

Before contacting TLX Technologies, the manufacturer approached several other suppliers and was told that it was not possible to manufacture such a valve.

The TLX Solution

TLX Technologies’ engineers were able to successfully design and produce an automatic compression release solenoid valve that satisfied all the requirements laid out by the manufacturer. The solenoid was able to:

  • Consistently operate at temperatures exceeding 572°F (300°C)
  • Withstand the vibration created by the engine
  • Fit into a smaller package size

The new solenoid designed and produced by TLX Technologies reduced the load on the starter. This required a smaller battery, starter motor, and alternator, resulting in lower total vehicle cost.
