Incorporating technology into wearable products can be a complex challenge. Stability and durability of the components are important considerations during the design process. A manufacturer of running shoes wanted to include technology in their shoe that would allow the shoe to automatically adjust to the speed of the shoe’s wearer. As the wearer would increase speed, the shoe would tighten to conform to the wearer’s foot, thus providing the comfort and support needed when running. A solution was needed to control the dispersal of air in the dual-bladder cushioning system in the shoe.
After looking at the desired technology, TLX designed a miniature solenoid air valve that utilized magnetic latching technology integrated into the shoe’s cushioning system. The unique design worked in conjunction with the cushioning system’s sensor to disperse air between the bladders as needed. The design not only fit into the tight space in the sole of the shoe and provided the necessary flow parameters needed for the cushioning system but was also durable enough to withstand the constant pounding of even the most aggressive runner. The use of magnetic latching technology in the design minimized power consumption and extended the life of the battery.
For applications requiring low pressure and compact design, the miniature air valve solenoid provides an excellent energy efficient solution. Solenoid can be configured as an on-off or latching operation for battery operated applications.
