A manufacturer of fluid handling systems sought a solution for potential “run-away” pump situations on their heavy duty fluid sprayers. When the pump lost fluid due to an empty bucket, etc., the pump would enter into a “run-away” mode causing damage that would ultimately diminished the life of the pump. The manufacturer wanted to eliminate this problem by stopping the pump automatically whenever it lost fluid. Since the sprayer could be used in hazardous locations, precautions against fire or explosion also needed to be considered.
TLX determined that the best solution for this application would be an intrinsically safe latching solenoid. The high speed “extend” operation of this solenoid allowed for an extremely quick response time. When the electronic control system sensed the pump entering into an over speed condition, the solenoid was pulsed causing the plunger to extend very quickly stopping the pump so that no damage occurred. In addition, this solenoid’s design provided built-in protection circuitry making it intrinsically safe for use in hazardous locations.
For safety applications where potential fire and explosion hazards need to be considered, the intrinsically safe latching solenoid design provides an excellent energy efficient solution. This solenoid can be customized to fit a variety of applications and electronic drivers. Strokes and force are flexible depending on solenoid size.
