Open Frame Latching Solenoid
A manufacturer sought a cost effective solution for operating a low pressure gas valve in an outdoor patio heater. Based on the specifications it was decided that a solenoid actuator, compact in size and capable of holding the valve open for extended periods of time, was needed for the application. In addition, it was essential to the manufacturer that the solenoid be powered solely by a battery.
Due to the requirements, TLX determined that the best solution for the application was a custom open frame latching solenoid. Latching solenoids are compact in design and utilize almost no power. With just a 25-50 ms pulse of power, the latching solenoid quickly moves to the latched position and is held there by a permanent magnet. It is then released after receiving another pulse of power of the opposite polarity. This minimal use of power makes the latching solenoid well suited for battery operated applications. This custom open frame latching solenoid solution provided by TLX operated efficiently on one battery for the entire season thus eliminating extra cost and hassle for the manufacturer’s customers.
The open frame latching solenoid can be designed with either a push or pull action as well as configured for a variety of voltage requirements. In addition, it can also be designed as a non-latching solenoid if required for the application.
